Budgeting for College Students: A Prime Concern

One of the biggest concerns is budgeting for college students. There are many reasons that this is such a concern and one of the reasons is that so few students are able to live within a budget. They have never had to make tough financial decisions or choose between one bad decision and another. One reason is that we as parents work hard to provide for our children and do our best to shield them from some of the financial realities of life. This often does more harm than good because your teens leave for college with unrealistic expectations about money and managing money.

What are the Consequences of Unrealistic Budgets?

There are actually quite a few consequences the first is the credit card trap. Credit card companies often prey on college students. It is easy to promise the buy today pay tomorrow philosophy that is making credit card companies rich and telling students that they can live beyond their means. Unfortunately, the price for doing so is very high and comes in the form of a lifetime of high interest credit card repayments and a potential cycle of debt in addition to the possibility of starting life with credit that is already ruined.

How do I Teach my Teen about Budgeting?

This is a problem that many parents face. Schools do not teach personal finance courses as a rule of thumb. This leaves the responsibility on the shoulders of the parents. The problem with this of course, is that teens rarely give their parents much credit for intelligence and allow the wealth of information and guidance to go in one ear and out another. This is where going to an outside source is a wise investment.

Budgeting for college students is important. It sets the stage for how your teen college student deals with his or her finances throughout his or her life. By giving your teen the tools needed to thrive and live, even with rather stringent budget restraints, you are enabling your teen to experience success in life and not begin their financial lives burdened by a massive amount of debt.

Looking for a financial education video for teens and other resources?

Your teen needs to know how to manage money. There is no easy way to say it. You have a limited amount of time to teach them the skills needed to correctly navigate the murky waters of personal finance before they are swimming with the sharks. College is filled with credit card company sharks as well as the rip currents of student loans and the ever-present hurricane of want vs. need. The result is often a tsunami of debt by the time of graduation.

Give your teen a firm foundation when it comes to money management. Educate them about credit cards and the consequences of poor spending habits. Teach them to live within a budget before they are on their own and encourage them to learn about the responsible spending and saving habits as early as possible in order to insure proper budgeting for college students they will someday be.

DollarCamp totally inspired me to start living on a budget and saving

Ayada Savitall was great, the illustrations were A+, and connecting it to real life hit it all home

I didn't realize that credit card debt was so dangerous

I didn't realize that saving in your 20s was so important

DollarCamp was much more interesting than I was expecting

DollarCamp is all about inspiring young people to take control of their future..

I wish I had gone to DollarCamp before graduating College, I don't think I would be in debt now if I did.

Why don't they teach this stuff in school?

I liked the part about how your spending should reflect your values

I like the concepts of the course, especially the part about leading a financially sustainable life

It is amazing how far a little bit of savings goes over the years

DollarCamp should be a required course in College

[DollarCamp] made me take a closer look at my spending

I liked the easy going openness of it. You don't feel like there are any dumb questions

I am going to check my credit score

I liked that we talked about how to spend money based on the things I care about

I felt the course was positive and empowering
